Sustainable fashion provides an approach to circular fashion model by converging consumer consciousness, design thinking, brand proposition, new materials and advanced technologies. Teaching and learning for sustainability in higher education reflect social responsible practices in design. Donghua University, Edinburgh College of Art, Amsterdam Fashion Institute and LASALLE College of the Arts have carried out a joint research project on Sustainable Fashion by focusing on China fashion chain. This showcase area presents best practices of project-based teaching models on sustainable fashion in China, UK, the Netherlands and Singapore.

Currently, 73% of the world's clothing eventually ends up in landfills. Lower waste recycling rate is a big challenge for global fashion industry. Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality. Upcycling has become an important way for fashion industry to provide regeneration life cycle for fashion products. Collaborating with Yoofoo Elite, Cordis Hotels, Kaikai Group Co. Ltd, Donghua University has practised sustainable fashion design through various activities, such as graduation design competition, project-based teaching models, remaking old clothes and reusing of waste textiles.

The carbon footprint of the fashion industry is equivalent to that of international flights and maritime shipping combined. Reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact are important ways to forge a more sustainable future. ICICLE's MADE IN EARTH philosophy and KLEE KLEE's SLOW DOWN concept intends to reduce environmental impact in the production process, featuring natural dyes by taking a caring fashion approach in environmental protection. The adoption of digital designs, including complete garment knitting technology, 3D printing, digital printing and the improvement of fabrication process have also become effective solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of fashion industry.

Circular design is designing of a cycle in which resources are continuously cycled in various forms, following a reuse and recycle loop. Its goal is for zero waste, i.e. to send nothing to the landfill. Circular design calls for a closed loop, where recourses are continuously repurposed. One of the best examples is Reclothing Bank, a pioneer of sustainable fashion brand recycles waste plastic bottles into recycled polyester fabric(REPT), thus putting recycling and reuse in style. Langer Chen is dedicated to eco-friendly and certified organic practices, its All Seasons Outfit showcases the best practice for urban green fashion.

Cultural diversity is an eternal design theme in fashion. Traditional handicraft is not only the carrier of ethnic minorities' cultural heritage, but also reduces the impact of large-scale manufacturing on the environment. The redesign of traditional handicrafts in fashion products has become the focus of international sustainable fashion brands.Collaborating closely with craftsmen, Fashion4freedom explores the design potential and cultural value of different sustainable materials, and builds a more recyclable supply chah system for production. During the collaborations with China's ethnic minorities such as the Dulong community (Yunnan province), the Naze Naze project of Klee Klee is fully engaged in cultural protection.
